Opening on February 28, 1995, Denver International Airport (DIA) is a major international airport located in northeastern Denver, Colorado and is operated by the City and County of Denver. In 2006 it served 47,324,844 passengers, which ranks tenth worldwide (In 2005 it was ranked as the 11th busiest airport in the world). At 53 square miles, it is the largest airport by area in the United States.
The airport's distinctive white fabric roof is designed to be reminiscent of the snow-capped Rocky Mountains in winter. This roof covers the main terminal which is named for businessman and aviation pioneer Elrey B. Jeppesen whose "Jepp" navigational maps and charts are standard equipment in every commercial airline cockpit around the world. Additionally "DIA" is known for a pedestrian bridge connecting the terminal to Concourse A, offering a unique view of planes taxiing directly underneath.
The airport is a major hub for United Airlines and Frontier Airlines.
